¿Quién es Señor Alas?
¡Hola! My name is Señor Alas. I am very excited to join Leland High School for the 2021-2022 school year to teach Spanish I and Spanish II. I taught 6th Grade ELA at Leland School Park for the 2020-2021 school year.
I was born in the Philippines, a country in southeast Asia that was ruled by the Spaniards for four centuries. I moved to New York City in the third grade. I am certified in Spanish and English and have my degrees in Spanish Languages and Literature (with English and Art History minors) from Wagner College. As an undergraduate student, I spent two years in Spain studying at the Universidad de Valencia in Valencia and the Universitat de Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. I am currently in the second year of my Masters in Teaching program with the Mississippi Teacher Corps at the University of Mississippi.
I pursued my postbaccalaureate premedical studies at Columbia University after which I was a clinical information manager in the emergency department of a major trauma level I hospital in New York. Most recently, I served as a Community Health Advocate in French-speaking West Africa with the Peace Corps.
I also have a graduate degree in music/viola performance from the Conservatory of Music at the State University of New York where I studied with first chair violist of the Metropolitan Opera, Mr. Ira Weller.
I very much enjoy exploring different languages, cultures, and travelling. I look forward to sharing these passions of mine with my students at LHS.
